Crime Prevention Tips

Criminals will strike upon targets of opportunity in most cases. Here’s a list of reminders to continue a positive quality of life environment for you and your neighbors:

  • Keep lights on during the night around the exterior of your home.
  • Motion sensor lights will also deter criminal activity, in addition to your exterior fixed lighting.
  • A well-lit neighborhood is usually NOT a target of opportunity for criminals.
  • Wireless security systems (cameras, smoke & CO detectors) are excellent and affordable ways to monitor activity in and around your home.
  • Keep landscaping well maintained around home entrances and driveways to limit areas of cover for criminals.
  • A security alarm system is often beneficial for most households. They generally include sensors on all the entry doors, some motion activated outdoor lighting, sensors on windows and a direct link to a monitoring service.
  • Hiding valuables is a concern for every homeowner. Valuables should not be stored in drawers, jewelry boxes or easily accessible areas of the home, unless they are concealed. Many products can be found online that are called “false containers”. These are items that may look like canned food, shaving cream, soda cans, etc. with false bottoms or tops that unscrew.
  • If you are storing your valuables in a safe, do not store the safe in a master bedroom closet. This is usually a primary target for burglars. A safe should be concealed and bolted to a floor from the inside, so the bolts are not accessible.
  • Make photo copies and a ledger of the contents of your valuables; including receipts, descriptions, and serial numbers.
  • If you live in Parsippany and are going away for an extended period of time, take advantage of our Police Department’s House Watch Program. By visiting our website, www.parpolice.com, under the Forms and Information Tab, you can complete a House Watch Program Form which will advise our Officers when your home will be vacant for extended periods of time. The form is submitted directly to our Patrol Division and distributed to our Patrol Officers who will conduct random property checks on your home during their tours of duty. The form has information advising us; if lights will be on timers; if vehicles should or should not be in your driveway; and if relatives or neighbors can be contacted in case of emergencies.
  • If you are planning to be away from your home for a while, it is always a good idea to place your mail and newspaper deliveries on hold until you return. Accumulated mail and papers are a sure sign that no one is home.
  • And lastly, please call the Police to report suspicious behavior, persons or vehicles. Do NOT wait. If you feel it is suspicious, notify us. It is our duty and commitment to the Parsippany community to investigate the matter. Our non-emergency number is 973-263-4300 or in cases of emergency, dial 9-1-1.
