Lost Items - If you are missing a wallet, bicycle or other articles call 973-263-4334 with a description of what you lost, and the location you believed to have lost it. Often wallets, bicycles, license plates are turned in by citizens or found by officers.
Car Impounds – most cars towed by the police department are transported directly to the tow companies impound yard and not the police station. The exception is when there is evidence associated with the vehicle: Fatal motor vehicle accidents or recovered stolen motor vehicles are examples.
Firearms – If you are the owner of handguns or rifles that were confiscated by the police department, you may not get them back for the following reasons:
· Domestic Violence with act active Final Restraining Order (F.R.O)
· Convicted of Criminal Charges lodged against you
· Attempted suicide (without psychological evaluations)
Approval for the return of weapons must be granted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Weapon Return Unit (973-285-6198). If for any reason the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office feels you can not have the weapons returned, you may have the firearms sold by a third party.
Firearms and ammunition can be turned into the police department for destruction.
911 and Dispatch Calls – 911 calls are normally open to the public, however if a call contains information none disclosure in nature they may be withheld (ex: medical information, juvenile or internal affairs incident, etc.). If approved, the 911 call can be burned to a CD for a fee of $5.00. The phone lines and radio transmissions are only available by a subpoena, and with approval from the township prosecutor.
Mobile Video – are normally open to the public, however if a call contains information none disclosure in nature they may be withheld (ex: medical information, juvenile or internal affairs incident, etc.). If approved, the video can be burned to a DVD for a fee of $5.00.
Retention of Property & Evidence:
· Homicide: Indefinite
· Sexual Offenses: Length of Sentence
· Indictable Crimes: 5 Years from Sentence
· DP’s: 1 Year from Conviction
· P.T.I.: Must Have Completed Program
· Weapons/Replevin Actions: 6 Years
· Found Property: 6 Months
